Maybe try a spray adhesive.

Lesley, when i have a quilt with applique on it I quilt around it, so it should make no difference with the quilting. You could also anchor it with a single stitch or two in the middle or some place where it will not be noticed when you are quilting.

As I am learning to hand sew, that's how I want to attach the piece to the backing. I was just wondering if normal cotton thread is used or if I'd need wool thread or some of that DMC embroidery stuff.

I'm thinking that using a fusible to attach the wool would make it too stiff - yes? Also, what about quilting it - is it usual to quilt over the top of an applique?

Ahhh isn't learning new skills fun? I'm going to check out more on the needlefelting thing too - sounds interesting.
Very nice pattern!
To my post #6 (don't know if you saw it) in this thread I am adding concerning appliqué-quilting:
appliqué is normally quilted around the templates, only some (i.e. Baltimore f.ex.) have some quilting stitches on the templates to add to the design and creating some relief-decoration (some lines on a leave ...), but not felt-appliqué. If an appliqué-piece would be larger to need additional fixing, you could fix it on some places with some pretty buttons/pearls or tie (making knots and leaving about 1/2 inch of the thread) with pretty embroidery-floss.
Looking forward to see a picture of your practicing-piece!
