Can anyone please help me? I would like to know what I would need to start making a kids size basic patchwork quilt. I have a sewing machine that I would like to use to put it all together. Can anyone recommend a basic book on the process?
Many thanks,
Fiona.

Hi Fiona, If I were you I'd either go to my local library and get a couple of books and start reading or go to your local patchwork store. They are always happy to help beginners and will have all you need. Speaking to someone at your patchwork store might be easier than getting bogged down reading though! Good luck and let us know if there is any other help you need.
Kind regards
Fiona Kyle.

Just to add to the post above, I have a good book called Patchwork Basics with Australian Patchwork and Quilting magazine. The one I have is number 2 and it is full of patterns, instruction and techniques. I'd even start on a simple 'eye spy' quilt with a pack of pre cut charm squares from a store. Much easier if you haven't mastered a rotary cutter yet.
Hope this helps. PM me if you'd like to know anything else.
Fiona.

I started off by joining a Quilting Group. I was shown the basics and given a good understanding of the principles too. Try to find one in your area-often at a local church hallor community centre. A group may also have a good library of mags etc to borrow. Anyway I'm sure you'll get sucked in like allof us!!

Ok this is probably a dumb question, but what does an "I Spy" quilt look like? Would anyone have a picture of one??
Thanks for your help everyone,
Fiona.

I spy is like the game you played as kids. "I spy with my little eye a dog" and the quilt is full of lots of little things to look for. My daughter has a shaggy one with 7" squares both sides and lots of things to look for one side is bright and the other is country themed.
I have just finished a "Pockets of Fun " one for a baby friend with about 50 small squares on it. This one was bright and happy. there are many diferent designs around to choose from.
I hope this gives you an idea about what I mean.

I am sure somehwere in the past, some one in here had a piccy of an eye spy quilt in our msn site.
I will have a look for it later today and post the link if I can find it.
Other wise do a googles search for "Eye spy quilt".
I also have a pattern for one in one of my old mags. I'll try to find it for you and post a piccy if I can.

Thanks very much. I have just found an 'eye spy' pic. Another question, how hard/easy is it to put ruffles in between the squares?? I have seen a picture of one and would like to give it a go..... just not sure how to do it.

I think the 'ruffles' you mention are the 'shaggy' cookie was refering to above. There are lots of patterns for these but if you look in the Patchwork & Quilting section of this forum you will find a long discusion of the best way to make on here
This type of quilt goes together very quickly and doesnot require much precision or quilting once pieced as it is 'quilt as you go' so it is probably a good place to start?!
